French shutter dogs, a tiny piece of hardware loveliness.

Vintage French shutter dogs found on our renovation project in France, La Petite Maison Bleue.

bergère de volet (shutter shepherdess) in France

What are shutter dogs?

Shutter dogs hold shutters tightly in place when they are open, and all over France, if you look hard enough, you will find all different designs.

The shutter shepherdess

I was delighted to find these lovely little ladies on our house renovation in Lower Normandy. After a little bit of googling it turns out they are called bergère de volet (shutter shepherdess) or tête de bergère (shepherdess head).

As you can see, our little ladies are wearing a flat hat and have a pretty flower design on each side. So sweet and practical and will always make me smile each time I see them.
